King Derby, an 8-bit horse race on Mega888
Six pixel horses, an odds board for every pair from 1-2 to 5-6, and a finish-line result in big red digits. How the Mega888 version plays.
King Derby looks like an arcade game from the 1980s, all chunky pixels and bright green grass. There are no reels. Six horses run a race, and you bet on which two finish in front.
The odds board
Before each race a grid headed NEW ODDS shows every pair. Row 1 holds 1-2 through 1-6, row 2 holds 2-3 to 2-6, and so on down to 5-6. In our screenshot 1-2 paid 3, 2-5 paid 4 and 5-6 paid 5, while 1-3 stood at 500 and 1-6 at 1000. The red figure under each odds number is your stake on that pair.
On the right, a BET column switches between 0, 1, 10 and 50 coins. Under the grid are three tips (STARTER 4, FINISHER 6, SPRINTER 3), a FAST MODE switch and a line reading JACKPOT X3 X4 X5 FREE HORSE. LAST 5R RESULTS fills the right-hand column.
The race
The numbered horses gallop past bushes and rails. At the post the result flashes up in big red digits.
This race came in 4-6, which the board priced at 60. The WIN box stayed at 0, and COINS read 49.

What do you bet on in King Derby?
A pair of horses. The board lists every pair of the six runners, from 1-2 to 5-6, each with its own odds. You win if those two horses finish first and second.
Do the odds change?
Yes. The board is headed NEW ODDS and is redrawn before each race. In our screen they ran from 3 for 1-2 to 1000 for 1-6.
What do Starter, Finisher and Sprinter mean?
They are tips printed on the board naming a horse: Starter 4, Finisher 6 and Sprinter 3 in our screenshot. In the race we have, horse 6 did finish in the top two, but treat them as the game's hints, not a prediction.
